Time for Saudi women to shine in the saddle believes Saudi’s first female Olympic rider Dalma Malhas

She was the first female athlete from Saudi Arabia to ride for the Kingdom in an Olympic-level event, now Dalma Malhas is dreaming of competing in her own country for the first time ever. Back in 2010 Dalma rode to glory in the inaugural Youth Olympic Games in 2010 in Singapore and winning a bronze medal in the 14 to 18 age group, becoming only the third Saudi athlete at that point to win an Olympic medal.

The upcoming Diriyah Equestrian Festival will be a huge moment for the Kingdom’s female riders and will fire up future generations

But now Dalma is looking forward to another milestone in her sporting career riding in a mixed Saudi national equestrian team for the first ever time on home soil in the upcoming Diriyah Equestrian Festival.

She said: “It’s a rendezvous I’ve been dreaming about for a very long time. I am really excited, this is going to be a first time for me competing on home soil. I’ve been all over the world, I did the World Championships, I’ve really been everywhere except Saudi Arabia.

“It will be more emotional in a very good way, very motivating. It will have an extra element of pride, I will feel more connected. It is already a big honour for me to represent my country all over the world, but now the fact I’m representing my country in my country at a world class level is the cherry on the cake.”

The festival at the Al Duhami Farm on the outskirts of historic Diriyah will be the first FEI sanctioned competition in Saudi Arabia, with points earned counting towards qualification for individual riders to the Tokyo 2020 Olympics and the World Cup.

Across six days, from December 12 to 14 and 19 to 22, the event will welcome 150 riders, 150 grooms, 50 officials, 300 companions and trainers, 250 members of the club and 150 crew members. Some 1,500 visitors are expected to attend and will witness Saudi Arabia’s hospitality with the offering of 15 food trucks catering to international cuisines, 10 shops and game and federation exhibitors.

While it will be the first time the mixed Saudi team will compete in the Kingdom, it isn’t the first time they have ridden together competitively, that watershed moment came at the Nations Cup in October’s Morocco Royal Tour.

Dalma said: “Honestly it was wonderful, this is going along with everything that is happening in the country and Vision 2030. There is a big push to move forward.

“The pace at which all this is happening is unbelievable. I think it’s amazing, really we want to make the most out of this, and the fact this is the first time we really want to do our best at the Diriyah Equestrian Festival. It is a big world class event and this year women will be able to rise, I am almost at a loss for words, I can’t describe how excited I am.

“The need for family support is huge, it’s enormous. The best way to understand something is to live the experience themselves. So, for families I think this festival is a wonderful opportunity to learn about the sport firsthand and be a part of it. They will realise how much work goes into the sport and how it is moving in a positive direction.

“This is a sport that takes you away from all the negative elements and it motivates women to have dreams and to know it is possible. The festival makes the sport more accessible. Everything starts with a desire and seeing what hard work can bring will give people an idea about the equestrian dream.”

The Diriyah Equestrian Festival is part of the Diriyah Season, an epic month of iconic sports events such as Formula E, top-class men’s tennis and a World Heavyweight Title fight – The Clash On The Dunes. Known as the home of kings and heroes, the stunning UNESCO World Heritage site Diriyah will also stage performances from some of the biggest music artists on the planet.

Olympic equestrian hero Ramzy Al Duhami, who won team bronze in the London 2012 Games, and his wife and partner Sara Baban, are hosting the event at the bespoke riding arena they have created together. Both firmly believe that the DEF 2019 can provide a massive boost to female equestrianism in the country.

Ramzy said: “The field is open now in Saudi Arabia for female equestrianism and women are being seen as partners to men and capable of supporting the progress of the equestrianism in international events, which will reflect on the development of the sport.

“This festival delivers a message that sport in general – and equestrianism in particular – is open to all Saudis and that girls can participate at national and international levels. It also inspires the younger generation to take up sport and follow in the steps of their national sporting role models.

“The talent is there and so are desire, dedication and commitment, which means it is only a matter of time, but they will eventually get there, and we will continue to see them do well,” the Olympic medalist added.

Sara Baban said: “I am excited for the girls; I’ve been rooting for them all this time. There are so many girls at our school that want to ride and actually they are more motivated than the boys. There is a huge amount of ambition there.

“It is a sport that you don’t have to show your strength in order to be at the top. It’s not about being stronger it’s about that connection that you have with horse. It is one of the few sports that the women can beat the men.”

Tickets for all of Diriyah Season’s spectacular events and entertainment will be available at www.diriyahseason.sa with Formula E, Clash On The Dunes and Diriyah Tennis Cup tickets now on sale. SAUDI ARABIA’S DIRIYAH TENNIS CUP WILL GIVE BEST MENS PLAYERS ON PLANET STRONG PREPARATION FOR 2020 SEASON, SAYS WORLD NUMBER FIVE

Daniil Medvedev says the $3 million tournament will be a ‘big part’ of his preparation for Grand Slams such as January’s Australian Open

Some of the greatest men’s players on the planet can use the upcoming $3 million Diriyah Tennis Cup in Saudi Arabia as ideal preparation for the Australia Open, says one of its big-name competitors.

World number five, Russia’s Daniil Medvedev, is one of six confirmed names heading to the Diriyah Arena in the UNESCO world heritage site for the first international tennis tournament to be staged in the Kingdom, presented by Saudi Aramco on December 12, 13 and 14.

It’s been a breakthrough year for the fan favourite, reaching six consecutive tournament finals, including one at the 2019 US Open and two at Masters 1000 events with a career high ranking of number five.

Now Medvedev believes the competitive nature of the Diriyah Tennis Cup, presented by Saudi Aramco, can provide an ideal platform to build on that success, especially with the first Grand Slam event of 2020, the Australian Open taking place a little more than a month after the Saudi tournament.

Medvedev said: “Saudi will be a big part of my preparation for the new season. Coming to Saudi the heat and conditions will be similar to Australia. It will be a great test for us.

“It’s in our pre-season so we’ll want to get that match time in to prepare for the new season – but the fans should expect us to fight hard like in any tournament. It will be competitive and hopefully they’ll be lots of fans coming to support us there.

“Hopefully I can play some great tennis, help the country raise awareness of the sport and inspire people to play. Looking at the players confirmed it’s a really great field.

“I’ve heard a lot of good things about Saudi Arabia. I’m excited to promote tennis there especially as it’s the first tournament.

The tournament is part of the Diriyah Season, an epic month of showcase sports events being hosted by the GSA.

The Diriyah Tennis Cup showdown has confirmed six leading players to date for the inaugural tournament. As well as Medvedev this includes three-time Grand Slam champion Stan Wawrinka of Switzerland.

Talented world number 12, Fabio Fogini, who was the first Italian to win an ATP Masters 1000 title this year in Monte Carlo and highly-rated David Goffin (Belgium), the former world number 7 will also present in Diriyah.

The big-serving American John Isner, with over 10,000 aces on tour, and five-time ATP champion Lucas Pouille of France, an Australian Open semi-finalist this year complete the current line-up. Officials will name the final two players in the coming weeks.

Medvedev will go into tournament with confidence after a great year, in the past week missed out on closing rounds of the Nitto ATP World Tour Finals which also included another epic showdown with World Number One, Rafael Nadal in London.

He said: “It’s been a great year for me, especially the second half. The highlights were in Washington and then finishing in Shanghai and winning that title. With six titles and two of them Masters titles, it wasn’t something I expected if I’m honest with you.

The 23-year-old Russian also gave some insight into what it has taken to reach the top echelon of the men’s game, as he closes in on ‘The Big Three’; namely Rafael Nadal, Novak Djokovic and Roger Federer.

“To be successful in tennis you need to fight hard and play with passion. You need to fight hard on every single point. Look back on the times it doesn’t go well and always try to improve and always get better. Self-reflection is important. That might sound a bit tough for the kids, but that’s what it takes to break through.'

Tickets are now available at www.diriyahseason.sa with nine different ticket categories available to suit all budgets – the perfect event for groups of friends and families.

The Diriyah Tennis Cup is taking place at the 15,000-seater Diriyah Arena being purpose built at the ancient site of the Kingdom’s first capital, known as the home of kings and heroes. ‘Iconic’, ‘Beautiful’ and ‘Challenging’ - Tributes paid to Saudi Arabia’s Diriyah Circuit ahead of Formula E’s return to the Kingdom

Saudi Arabia’s Diriyah Circuit has been hailed by Formula E drivers and officials as one of the most iconic tracks of the championship, having made a huge impact during its debut last season. Last year saw an incredible race against time to create the street racing circuit in the middle of the stunning UNESCO world heritage site on the outskirts of Riyadh. In a matter of mere months, thousands of engineers met a hugely ambitious deadline to deliver an amazing venue in time for Formula E to host its inaugural race in the Middle East.

This year the ABB FIA Formula E Championship returns to the Diriyah Circuit for season six, with a rare ‘doubleheader’ and back to back races on November 22 and 23rd.

Ahead of the thrilling action, tributes have been paid to the Kingdom’s street circuit which sees the futuristic sport weaving through the historical venue known as ‘the land of kings and heroes, Saudi Arabia’s first capital city.

Pedro Merry, one of Formula E’s co-founders and its Head of Legal, said: ‘In some places big things have small beginnings but in Saudi Arabia big things have very big beginnings. Last year was amazing and I truly believe that this year will be even bigger. All the Formula E teams are looking forward to the races.

‘Formula E has very different venues – ‘I would say this is the most iconic place where we have raced. Racing in this place is unbelievable, and we cannot ask for more. Add to that the effort that the people of Saudi Arabia are putting in; well they should be proud.’

The Formula E co-founder was speaking at the recent launch of the Diriyah Season in the Kingdom, a month-long celebration of sport which sees electric racing kick off an amazing lineup that also includes the Clash On The Dunes – the first heavyweight world boxing title Fight in the Middle East between Andy Ruiz Jn and Anthony Joshua – the Diriyah Tennis Cup featuring eight of the planet’s best men’s players and elite equestrianism in the Diriyah Equestrian Festival. And once again Formula E action will be followed by after race concerts performed by some of the most famous names around the globe.

It’s not simply the Diriyah Circuit’s location that sets it apart from rival tracks in cities such as London, Paris, Rome, Mexico City and New York. Drivers hailed the technical challenges and exciting racing its innovative design creates. There are 21 turns in total, some are ascending and some descending so drivers must contend with slopes and corners simultaneously, one second going down the next second going up. The course also features one of the longest straights of the championship where drivers will look to their cars to attack at speed.

Felipe Masse, the ex-Formula One legend who made his Formula E debut in Saudi Arabia last year with Team Venturi, said: ‘The track is fantastic. It is beautiful and it’s quite difficult to find a track like it. You have a lot of uphills and downhills, difficult corners and a long straight which is good for overtaking. It’s a real pleasure to drive this track. It is amazing to see how much the country is supporting the sport. It’s very exciting to see back to back races, especially at the start of the season, so this will be very competitive, it’s a lot of points.’

André Lotterer this year will be racing with the Tag Heuer Porsche Formula E team as the German luxury car manufacturer makes its historic debut in the sport in Saudi Arabia. He said: ‘The Diriyah Circuit is the best track on the championship’s calendar, it is very challenging to drive and, of course, thrilling as well because I’ve changed teams and I am coming with Porsche.

‘It is great to come to Diriyah, we were very impressed last year, the whole set-up, the organisation and the warm welcome we had. To be part of this challenge is fantastic, for me it is the place to be, the best professional environment, and for racecar drivers it is the race of the future.’

Carlo Boutagy, CEO of CBX, Promoter of E-Prix in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, said this year the event would surpass even last’s years spectacular results.

‘This year will be ten times bigger. Last year we had a three-day event, this year it has expanded into 30 days of festivities under the ‘Diriyah Season’ umbrella. We are very honored to kick off the season with Formula E. And, never before in motorsport history has such a prestigious line up of racing brands been assembled on a grid. It will be the first time the 4 German automotive superpowers - Porsche, Mercedes, BMW, Audi go head to head.

‘The doubleheader is also a rarity, it’s not every race that this happens on the calendar. We see every year one or two cities being granted this and I think last year we must have done something outstanding for Formula E to give us this wonderful opportunity and privileged and host the two races here at the Diriyah Circuit. ‘Tickets available for Formula E start from SAR450 for single day Grandstand tickets, including grandstand seating with a view of all the action, access to the dedicated fan zone, the Allianz E-Village and off-track entertainment, and access to the post-race concert on the day featuring an international superstar. Two-day tickets are priced at SAR800, representing a saving of SAR100.

Premium hospitality starts from SAR2,500 for a single day package including valet parking, luxury indoor and outdoor lounges overlooking the Formula E track, complimentary tours of the stunning UNESCO World Heritage site of At-Turaif, VIP dining and golden circle to the post-race concert. Two-day packages are priced at SAR4,000.

The Boss Emotion Club returns with two-day packages only featuring VIP drop-off areas, exquisite fine dining in an incredible track-side location, exclusive pitlane walks, garage tours and driver access, plus the best access into the post-race concerts and a VIP viewing platform, priced at SAR15,000.

His Royal Highness Prince Khalid bin Sultan Al Faisal Al Saud, President of the Saudi Arabian Motor Federation, said: ‘The track has proven itself as a world-class venue for thrilling motorsport. We cannot wait to fire up Saudi Arabia’s passion for motorsport again - this year will be truly electrifying.’

Last year the Formula E event sold-out, with 40,000 fans from 80 different countries packing the grandstands. This year, following the recent launch of tourist visas, the crowds and the energy are expected to be more than double that.

Tickets for all of Diriyah Season’s spectacular events and entertainment will be available online at www.diriyahseason.sa with Formula E Tickets and Clash On the Dunes tickets on sale now. “It is great for the country, the fans and young players” - Stan Wawrinka on why the Diriyah Tennis Cup will be special for Saudi Arabia

He’s a fan favourite known around the world as ‘Stan the Man’ and now tennis enthusiasts in Saudi Arabia will be able to watch three-time Grand Slam in action with the announcement of the $3 million Diriyah Tennis Cup.

Three-time Grand Slam winner highlights the line-up of the first-ever tennis tournament in the kingdom

He’s a fan favourite known around the world as ‘Stan the Man’ and now tennis enthusiasts in Saudi Arabia will be able to watch three-time Grand Slam in action with the announcement of the $3 million Diriyah Tennis Cup.

Staged as part of the Diriyah Season (which includes Formula E, World Heavyweight boxing and an elite equestrian event) Stan Wawrinka will battle it out in a unique tournament featuring eight of the world’s best men’s tennis players, all with their eyes on the coveted Diriyah Cup.

It will be the first time international tennis has come to the Kingdom and, ahead of the contest, ‘Stan the Man’ spoke about his excitement of playing in the Diriyah Tennis Cup, staged in an iconic venue at the a UNESCO world heritage site, in the 15,000-seater purpose built Diriyah Arena.

Q: you were so close to win the European Open in Belgium, can you tell us what happened and how Andy Muuray won at the end?

First it’s always been a pleasure sharing a court with Andy, great to have him back & congrats on a strong tournament, As for the match he hanged at the end and did not want to lose, it was so close, sure I do not like to loss but happy to see Andy back and on winning track.

Q: How important is it for tennis to be coming to Saudi Arabia and bring the game into a new market? How excited are you to be playing here?

I think it is great for tennis, but it is more important for the kids here around to see some live action of tennis. I’m really excited to be playing in the first tournament ever to be played here. So that is going to be really special and hopefully it will be a great atmosphere, and I’m looking forward to seeing all the young fans.

Q: As an international tennis player you travel a lot throughout the year. How do you feel about visiting and playing in Saudi Arabia?

I always enjoyed traveling and you need that as a tennis player because you travel 10 months a year, but also after so many years on the tour I enjoy even more when I get to a new place, a new tournament and to see something new, and that is something great here.

Q: What do you think of the ongoing sporting revolution in Saudi Arabia? What does it mean for you as an athlete?

I have heard a lot of good stuff [about Saudi Arabia] and especially what they are doing now for sport. They are making a lot of big events in different kinds of sports, and that is something great for the country, for the fans and the kids to see all the sports and events coming here.

I’m sure it is going be something amazing. To build a tennis court here with so many people attending a tennis tournament for the first time will feel really special as a player to come here.

Q: Diriyah Season features different high-profile sporting events. What do you think of the season and its program?

It is a big program with many events such as Formula E, boxing and tennis. It is going to be really busy for everybody and I’m looking forward to it. I’ve heard only good things from Formula E last year, and I saw where the tennis court is going to be and I’m sure it will be great.

Q: Speaking of the other events in Diriyah Season, the tennis competition is a few days after the Clash on the Dunes which pits Andy Ruiz Jr against Anthony Joshua in the first World Heavyweight title fight in the Middle East. Who is your pick for this incredible showdown?

They’re going to be at the same stadium. We are going to play the tennis after [the fight, which will be] a few days before us. Joshua is a big one and I’m betting on him.

Q: You’ll be up against Russia’s Daniil Medvedev, Belgium’s David Goffin and Italy’s Fabio Fogini and four more competitors to be announced later. How do you see your participation in the inaugural edition of Diriyah Tennis Cup? How does it impact your preparations for the next season?

I think it is going to be a perfect start [to the season]. It is going to be at the end of the pre-season. Starting with a tournament like that with so many good players is going to be super great for my tennis.

I think the atmosphere is going to be great. It is the first tennis tournament here and it will be really special, so I’m happy to be playing here for the first year and hopefully many more years.

Q: Some fans might be tempted to watch the games on TV rather than attending the action live. How different is it living the whole experience in the stands?

It is completely different from TV. [In reality] you can see the speed, you can see the spin and the way we are moving. I think it is way more impressive to watch it live. You also feel the atmosphere, the tension on the court and the stress from the players, so it is always something special to watch sport live.

Q: Looking ahead to the new season, what are your aspirations? What do you want to achieve?

I need to finish the year and then have a good off-season and pre-season and work out to keep improving. This year I’m really happy to be back in the top 20 and I saw that I can still beat the top players and make some big results. Hopefully next year I can keep pushing in that direction and try to get back higher in the ranking and try to push a little for more big results.

Q: What does a tennis player do in the pre-season training? How does your preparation differ from some of the other big players?

We take the time to have an off-season in tennis. We don’t have super long off-season, so after the last tournament normally we will take a little bit of holiday, maybe 10 days or maximum two weeks but probably 10 days and then you have a few weeks to basically work on your fitness and your tennis.

Most of the time I start first on the fitness side and move onto tennis and fitness together, and finish with only tennis. That is the work you put. For sure when you are 34 years old you don’t work the same as when you were 20. Now for me I can be focusing more on small things. I don’t need to put so much quantity. I still do it because my game needs it and l know that is how I get to the top of my game, but it is slightly less than when I was younger.

Q: What do you think of next year’s majors? Do you have a favourite? Is it the clay where you had a lot of success?

I think they are all different and amazing. Australia is the first in the year and I love the atmosphere and the fans. They really enjoy and celebrate the sport. It is great because in Europe it is wintertime, so you arrive first in a sunny place.

French Open is clay court and I grew up on clay. It is close to my home and all the friends and family come. [Wimbledon] is always special with the grass and there is so much history in the tournament.

New York is a bit more like the crazy one. The atmosphere is crazy and electric, and the city is amazing. So, I always enjoy each tournament I compete in, and I always look at the positive and enjoy what I love.

Q: Are you looking forward to the Olympics? Are you excited by the potential to play alongside Roger again? How do you compare it the majors?

Olympic year is always very busy on the schedule. It is tough to make the right schedule. It is a big calendar. I’m looking forward to all the tournaments. For sure the majors are important, and the Olympics can be something really exciting, [and I’m excited] to play in Tokyo. But again, for us there is so much happening week after week that you need to be focused on the present and you need to be focused on what you are doing. Put some goals but the rest of the time you need to stay in the present because if not, you miss so much.

Q: What does a tennis player eat during a tournament and in training?

I think we are all different. It is an individual sport. We all have different bodies and different metabolism, and we eat differently. For me, it is simple food. I love and enjoy food and I always try food from the country [I’m in]. But again, we are athletes and we need to be careful. We plan but I’m not that extreme and I try to enjoy and eat healthy.

Q: Do you enjoy Arabic food? Have you tried any of the local food?

Yes, I do for sure. Not every day but I enjoy it every once in a while and eat that kind of food.

Q: What does tennis mean for you? What role does it play in your life?

For me, it has always been my passion. I loved tennis because it is a game where you play against someone and you need to find a solution. You enjoy, you are on the court, you can try a new shot. So, it has always been special and since I [turned] professional, [playing] in front of people and in a great atmosphere is the reason I keep playing tennis.

Q: And what about sport in general? How do you think it shapes one’s personality?

I think any sport is a good school of life. We are lucky with tennis that we travel a lot. We need to take care of our own team. We need to stay humble and to never forget the hard work that you have to put if you want to be on the top of your game. For me, it has always been something special to be a tennis player.

I think it is great to do sport and be active. It makes you do something that you can really enjoy [as] it is a game. Any sport starts as a game that you can play with friends and enjoy in the afternoon and be challenging a little bit.

Q: What advice and tips of success would you give to the young Saudi talents who would like to be the next Stan Wawrinka?

It is all about the love of the game. It is all about the passion. Never forget why you started playing the game. It is a game, [so] you need to enjoy. You need to enjoy going on the practice court. It has to be fun and that is the most important [thing].

Q: How did you start playing tennis? Why did you choose it in particular?

My parents wanted my brother and I to play a sport outside school and we had a tennis court five minutes away and that is how we started [playing tennis].

Q: You are known for your serves and powerful backhands. How important is the physical aspect of your game?

I practice a lot since I was young and I always enjoy the fitness side, [which] is also important. It is my game to be powerful from the baseline and try to take advantage with my shot.

Q: Have you started thinking about a retirement date and the next chapter of your career?

It is tough to answer this question. I’m close to the end of my career. I’ve got a few more years but as long as I feel great on the court and as long as my body is there, mentally I want to keep going. I enjoy what I’m doing and that is the most important [thing].

Q: How was the nickname “Stan the Man” coined? Is there a story behind that?

It came long time ago when I was playing a big match in US Open in New York. The next day I was in the newspaper and they called me “Stan the Man” and that is how it started.
