At-Turaif District
The heart of historic Diriyah lies At-Turaif District, an architectural masterpiece and a living record of the First Saudi State. Since 2010, At-Turaif has been inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List, becoming a global symbol of traditional mud-brick construction that continues to preserve the story of leadership. The district stands proudly on the western bank of Wadi Hanifah, the site chosen by Imam Abdulaziz bin Mohammad bin Saud in 1766, as the center of governance and the seat of the Saudi Royal family, making At-Turaif the vibrant and majestic heart of Diriyah. Spanning approximately 235,000 square meters, the district is home to palaces, mosques, and public facilities that reflect the grandeur of that era. At its center stands Salwa Palace, alongside At-Turaif Mosque, Sbalat Moudhi —one of the oldest charitable endowments of the Saudi royal family—and Bayt Al-Mal, which symbolized the state’s organization and economic power. Surrounded by the scenic views of Wadi Hanifah, At-Turaif’s unique natural setting completes the remarkable landscape that gives the district its name and distinction. Today, At-Turaif is more than a historic site, it is a living legacy that connects the past with the present, a cultural destination inviting visitors to explore a rich history that endures through its walls and palaces.
